Let’s admit it: as busy leaders, we all like to imagine our workdays as impeccably organized symphonies of value creation. We’re the maestros conducting a flawless business-growth concerto “All day every day,” right? (cue the record scratch…) In reality, many of us find ourselves humming a totally different tune: from “I’m deleting spam and calling it progress” to “I spend my days working on stuff my staff should be doing.” Which is why my two favorite executive survey statements never fail to amuse (and occasionally sting): “I spend my days working on the right things that will help our business grow.” Translation: I’m the strategic jedi who wields a to-do list that’s always aligned with our grand vision. You know, the stuff that moves the needle. “I spend my days working on things that only I can do for our business.” Translation: I’m the irreplaceable genius who handles the top-tier decision-making and leaves the paper-jamming printer to someone else. But how often do we really nail these claims? That’s where my answer scale comes in—from the gleaming utopia of “All day every day” to the bare-knuckled confession of “I dream of such days.” If we’re honest, some of us hover closer to “I dream of such days” more often than we’d like, only occasionally poking our heads into “I’m sort of doing this… on Thursdays… after coffee.” Here’s the truth: You’re probably not working on the perfect growth-building tasks every waking minute. Sometimes, you’re just trying to remember your Zoom password. The world won’t collapse if you realize there are plenty of people who can do that marketing deck better, faster, and—dare we say—more enthusiastically than you. It’s okay to delegate! If you find yourself stuck at the bottom of the scale (“I dream of such days…”), don’t despair. Let it serve as a gentle nudge, or maybe a not-so-gentle kick in the pants, to realign your calendar. Think of it as an intervention from the business gods telling you, “Step away from formatting that spreadsheet, dear executive, and focus on the big picture.” Next time you look at your schedule, ask yourself: Am I inching closer to ‘All day every day,’ or am I still stuck fantasizing about a productivity paradise that exists only in my daydreams? The key to climbing that scale is small, intentional shifts. Delegate, or just kill a few tasks you secretly dread and block off some strategic thinking time. Eventually, with the right team around you, you might just make it to “All day every day”—or at least “Most days, after my morning espresso.” And that’s a victory worth celebrating! I help business leaders grow their businesses faster than they ever thought possible, which often includes helping them identify things to NOT do.
